Other Workbenches and Shop Furniture
Use of modular bases makes it quick to set up - but also solid!
My other (work) benches are made using the Rockler modular shop stand system - I have added plywood backs, drawers and doors. For tops I have simply used kiln dried 2x4" studs mounted together using Kreg pocket hole screws. When I can afford it, I will be replacing these tops with laminated maple or birch tops.
I found the Rockler bench system to be very quick and easy to build. And it is sturdy, modular, not very pricey and looks good since all benches have the same base. They come with adjustable levelers making it very easy to set up the bench as well as fine tune the height. They can all be put on wheels so they can be moved around if necessary. And if you need to re-configure a work bench because your needs changes - well - the advantages should be obvious...
If you look at the background of the shop picture, you can also see the Triton Lumber Rack system. I bought two kits and put them side by side - I wanted a shorter distance between the "pegs" so I could store both long and short pieces. Since I am living in earthquake country, I also mounted three straps so I the wood can be secure if we had a little shake... The Triton system is very solid and well made, and I have not regretted getting them.
